RELG217: Religion and the Media

Semester 1

Religion and the Media aims at: exploring the role of media, the manner in which the various religions make use of the mass media including contemporary social media (cyberspace) e.g.: cellphones and internet; the positive and negative aspects of the media; and how ‘identity’ can be negotiated through the media.

Learners will be able to gain an understanding of the relationship between religion and media; gain knowledge of the role of religion in media; learn how media use religion to influence the perceptions of people; and acquire the skills to recognize the explicit and implicit role of the media in shaping religion.

Note: this is a cognate module recognized for degree purposes as a Media and Cultural Studies module. The course has been modified to focus on issues relevant to Media students. MCS cannot offer a full programme in 2016 due to acute staff shortages.
