Students are introduced to some of the central concepts and debates in the field of media studies. This is an exciting and challenging area of study to which students bring a wide range of skills from their own experience as well as from other academic disciplines they may be studying at UKZN.

By the end of the course students will have learned about what the mass media actually is, and how it relies upon codes and representations to shape reality; and the technological and economic environment within which the media functions.
