Mr. Jabulani Nkuna is a PhD candidate in the Department of Media and Cultural Studies, University of Kwazulu-Natal. He is also a Lecturer at the Department of Communication Science at UNISA. His research interest includes new media policy and regulation, alternative or radical media in the digital age, digital apartheid (digital divide), media ownership transformation, decolonising communication spaces and race representation in the media. His PhD investigates the extent to which social media has become an alternative media in age of digitisation. There is no doubt that social media presents various opportunities for everyone in society to consume and produce media products. However, the marginalised social movement have not used social media optimally. His research will explore the opportunities and challenges of using social media as an alternative media by the marginalised social movements.
